Busky: What is it, how did I get it, and how do I remove it?
By Matt Williams
Busky is a Trojan downloader piece of spyware that sneaks onto your PC without your knowledge or consent and wreaks havoc with your computer system. It is dropped onto a user's system without the user's knowledge, often piggybacked on a downloaded program or through an exploit in the Windows operating system. The Busky program also monitors internet activity and installs additional adware and spyware. By its nature, the Busky program is a downloader and once it is on your system, it facilitates the download of additional spyware and adware programs.
Because Busky downloads additional malware, Busky represents a major security threat to your PC and can lead to huge infections of spyware and adware on your computer. It also reports your internet activity to its developer including search histories and URLs visited. Because so many programs gobble up your PC's resources it also slows your system down.
How did Busky infect your system in the first place? It may have piggybacked on a freebie download or it could have exploited a hole in your Windows Operating System. Either way, it's on your system and you need to get rid of it. The first order of business is to cruise over to Microsoft and get all the latest hotfixes and patches for your Windows Operating System or activate the Automatic Updates feature in Windows.
You can try to remove Busky by using the Add and Remove programs feature of Windows. In some cases, the Add and Remove programs will detect and list malware in its list of removable programs.
In Windows XP, access the Control Panel by clicking Start, then Control Panel. Choose Add/Remove Programs and wait while the list populates. Locate Busky in the list and click the add/remove button. Follow the prompts. Reboot your PC and double check to be sure it is gone from the Add/Remove Programs list.
The process is the same for Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000 except to access Add and Remove Programs, you go to the Start Button, choose Settings, then choose Control Panel.
If you have advanced computer skills and are willing to work within the Windows Registry to manually remove Busky, you can follow these manual removal instructions. Be sure to make a backup of your registry before performing these steps. Any mistake could result in catastrophic results.
